Visual development and concept artist Jordan Lamarre-Wan was kind enough to share some of the concept artwork he created for The Book of Life. This an animated feature film celebrating the Day of the Dead tradition was directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez and produced by Guillermo Del Toro, Reel FX and 20th Century Fox.
Jordan designed and painted many of the iconic environments while working with an extensive team of highly talented artists. He explains:
The movie’s beautiful art style has three different visual language; one for each of the three worlds. The world is also made up of sculpted wood reminiscent of a puppet’s set and pays homage to Mayan, Spanish and Mexican architecture. The beauty of the designs can be attributed to the visual direction by two impressive and inspiring figures; Simon Varela as Production Designer and Paul Sullivan as Art Director. The Character Designs originated by Jorge and his lovely wife Sandra Equihua.
Jordan as worked on many projects including Disney’s Epic Mickey games and is now working as a concept artist at Kojima Productions. To see more of his concepts for The Book of Life be sure to get your copy of the art book, The Art of the Book of Life.
