Tóraidhe is a personal graphic novel project by Concept Designer and VFX Art Director Aaron McBride. He has been working on Tóraidhe since 1997 and has been published in Spectrum 9 & 10 as well as displayed in Society of Illustrators museum in 2004. McBride describes Tóraidhe:
It is a period story much in the spirit of Last of the Mohicans and The Guns of Navarone. It follows a group of people who, on the eve of a world war, have immigrated to the last unoccupied place in the world. At its core Tóraidhe is about the lengths people often go to to reinvent themselves, rise above their station or sink beneath, all in an effort to gain the approval of others but ultimately themselves. Aesthetically it is is influenced by colonial military occupations throughout history. Many of the characters/costumes were influenced by stage puppetry. Where full body puppets are created that are extensions of the dancer’s body that also alter the performers silhouette.
McBride designed creatures and characters for films such as The Avengers, Iron Man, Rango, Harry Potter and the Pirates of the Caribbean films. He is currently planing to publish a collection for Tóraidhe in 2014.
